Being Elmo: it’s all about the love

Make time this week to catch Being Elmo, the documentary about the puppeteer Kevin Clash playing on PBS. The trailer holds the central message of both the film and Elmo, the beloved Sesame Street puppet that Kevin Clash brought to life: Elmo is all about love. Elmo just loves you now matter what. That this can be communicated with cloth and foam and sticks is a wonderment, but the other inspiration in the film is the story of Clash’s journey toward his dream, which he began – and achieved – early on in life. It’s a beautiful thing to see through pictures and old footage the boy with his home made puppets, giving them voice and life; and then to see him in the workshop or training puppeteers today, and welcoming a nine year old for a visit to the Sesame Street workshop, mentoring as he was mentored when young. His message of doing what makes you happy, and sticking to your creative vision is one I can’t hear often enough. Even now when I should know it by heart, I need a reminder every once in awhile.
